If people could do those things and do it right with out missing any thing up yes there would be a lack of that type of work. Although most people only know the basic knowledge of how to change and put in oil, power steering fluid and anti-freezes. In that regard they don't know how to do more deliberate work on a engine which give the mechanic more work and you have to under that many people do have engine problems more often then we know of. So there will still be plenty of work for a mechanic to do.
