I can see your point. We really only had a direct vote in the House of Reps, in the orginal Constitution. The Senate was once voted on by state officals, and the President is still elected by the Electoral College. I would argue a DEMOCRACY would more give us what you are talking about. Keep digging. You might want to look up the Constitution's major author. -QE
Check out Madison's thoughts and personal history, and you can see why he wasn't ready to turn things over to "the people".
Madison was a product of the landed gentry of colonial Virginia - like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and George Mason. These were people who expected to govern. Like Washington, Mason and Jefferson, Madison was determined to play a positive role in government in the best tradition of the Aristotelian aristocrat.
Madison was the oldest child of the wealthiest landowner in Orange County in the Virginia piedmont. As a young man without direction, he was indulged, and when the Revolution called him to his life's work, his father fully supported him financially. He was a serious student and received the best private schooling and tutoring available in the region. Ultimately, he attended the College of New Jersey - now Princeton University.
Aristotelian aristocrat (according to Mr. Conn): A person that believed there wealthy status required him/her to participate in the well-being of their country. This person benefited from society to have this class, so he/she has a duty to help preserve this society. -QE
I think that the United states chose the represenative republic over a democracy because they didnt want the people overpowering the government and causing it to fall. - Dave
The US chose to go with a Representative Republic because it is fair for the people because we get to vote for who we want for president.-RRNRD
