Harley

Whoa! Haha every time I think I've finally caught up there's like five zillion posts before I can get mine blogged haha. Okay random comment of the day. Does anybody know anything about Switzerland? Switzerland is a country that will rent you a bank box where you can store your priceless stolen goods, Switzerland is a country of excellent cheese, chocolate, and watches. Switzerland is possibly the awesomest country for skiing, and Switzerland remains neutral in all matters of war (except when protecting their borders from invasion). I've been on sabbatical for a while --for anyone who isn't quite sure what that means, a sabbatical is a period away from your normal routine, a time to immerse yourself in a different environment, a chance to see your life from a different perspective. Okay first things first. Welcome to the blog! For any of our newcomers. It's totallyconfusing to have go from a blog formerly of five to a blog of around twelveish so please stick to one name. I don't particularly care if you introduce yourself with your real name(Kalogas) I'm not to worried about somebody thinking to look for a few kids from Fleming on a random blog site but whatever. Ally please quit the super short posts about people not introducing themselves because it's just cluttering up this already chaotic blog. If you don't know who someone is and they won't have the good grace to tell you simply ignore them. There's nothing here making you read people's blogs. To Cardboard Box: who is cardboard box? Our topics for discussion thus far have been time/relativity, art/creativity, religion/faith, and strides into the future (I.E. new types of cars, oil, learning, etc.) We've covered nationalism, protectionism, and globalism as well. Please vent your opinions but please don't directly intend to offend.
Just some of my final thoughts on the argument/discussion about suffering. I'm going to try and be brief here because frankly I think that talking about suffering is depressing and sometimes can make the suffering worse.
--Senator--"You have so much potential! Brilliance and the ability to apply it strive for what you want!"
--Anne (please don't shoot me)--I have only one question: "MUST WE TAKE CARE OF EVERYONE?" (sorry I didn't mean to yell <3)
--Quinn (everyone)--I would like to propose the idea that maybe suffering is a state of mind rather than a state of being? In Senator's example he feels set back by the state of his family's finances whereas in your example you take a very different stance. So perhaps when you have less material items are you more likely to appreciate people and their influences in you life? What do you guys think?
--Banana Pancakes--If I were you I wouldn't presume to tell someone whether or not they are suffering if you yourself have not been in exactly the same situation. Just something to consider.
Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer: I liked your statement about computers having a copy of every book in the future thus making books obsolete. I think you should look into a book called "Fahrenheit 451" which is a Ray Bradbury story about firemen who are trained to destroy books. You might like it. After reading this I think that Ray Bradbury might have had quite a bit of insight into how our society will eventually become.
Kalogas: Interesting perspective but I have only one question. "Do we truely know what was as nobody was around to see the makings of the universe?" I know you're much more religiously inclined than I am so I don't ever mean to insult.
Senator: I laughed so hard about the Breakfast Buffet comment =) (sorry Banana Pancakes but it totally made my day).
Ally/Quinn: When do you consider faith/religion to become extreme and how do you base extremism?
Goober/Brick Bat: So since most people here would agree that technology is steadily taking over our lives should we have a global language at least in the world of technology?
Bill Joe: What precisely are you talking about?
Goober: So maybe having a large incredibly accessible internet source for research might be a bad thing? Especially considering that a lot of people know how to manipulate information that is public on a website. So maybe books remain a better source for research because it's easier to pinpoint false documents?
Banana Pancakes: Quick question. How can you have a yell fest over a blog? Written words?
Stonekid/Brick Bat: I agree with Stonekid about the current state of the oil industry. I also agree that we're going to need to look into renewable resources fairly soon. I have a question to pose however about foreign oil. Now that Bush is no longer in the white house do you think we'll be able to repair our relationship with Venezuela? Doesn't Venezuela have a fairly huge amount of oil resources?
Brick Bat: I think that people are born with an essential goodness. However, as Senator also commented, the environment a child is faced with will shape them incredibly. A child born into an upright family has a lower chance of a child born onto the streets of becoming evil. Is goodness or evilness simply an inbalance in the brain? Some sort of chemical wrongness like depression or schizophrenia? Or is it a matter of the soul? I think that humans are so vastly complex that maybe this question cannot be answered.

  1. Hey Harely. I hope you feel better. I think that extremism is generally some type of faith mixed with a political ideology. The reason why it then becomes extreme is because a group claims to know the political will of God(s). For any group or person to identify with a political movement in the name of religion invokes a rather extreme interpretation, where an ideology is sacred and worth fighting for. I also would say that extremists believe they have a more accurate understanding on the subject of God’s will than the rest of the world. Thus, they appear extreme compared with the majority of faiths and/or civilizations, because they present a very literal interpretation of good and evil, an interpretation outside common understanding or agreements regarding right and wrong. -QE
